About SquigglyFrog Studios
SquigglyFrog Studios (Sfs) is a one man operation based out of Boise, ID. Sfs develops games for Windows XP Sp 2 and higher, and for the XBox 360 using XNA, a programming framework released by Microsoft. Sfs mostly focuses on 2d games but will eventually start producing 3d games as well. Being a one man operation, there is basically no budget allotted for any of this, so I rely on finding assets that are in the public domain or artists and composers who are willing to work for royalties or for credit.
SquigglyFrog Studios was originally set up back in 2004 while the programming was done in C++. After several small unreleased titles, I began using a promising library called CDX, which was similiar to an internet handle I had used for years, cdxrd. Eventually to reflect this the name was changed to cdx-games.com to compliment my other online activities such as a now defunct website, cdx-gifts.com that I had run for many years. However, there is a game out there that seemed to be a european release called CDX which led many visitors to my website that were in search of something else. Plus, I had the feeling the name just didnt fit, so early in 2009 the name was changed back to what it should have been all along.
Development times tend to take a bit longer when it's a one man team, especially when you consider family obligations. I do have a spouse and three children who seem to eat up the majority of my time, but this also provides a good playtest environment. If the kids find it boring, then most likely others will too and this allows me to change my strategy a bit. This also allows me the time to work on each game and give it the focus we believe it deserves. Often times the games do not live up to *my* standards and therefore never see the light of day in public, other times many games are developed just far enough to prove a concept.
Over the next year I planning on taking several of these 'concept' games are finishing them out to completion and placing them up for download. Depending upon the game, it might be developed for windows, the Xbox or both. On the XBox there will be a small fee for each game that is charged by Microsoft. This is used to help obtain better quality art & audio assets in the future, and will be minimal. Most games that will be released on the XBox will only be for 200 points, or about $2.50 usd. On rare occasions a game may be priced at 400 points. Games that are released on Windows will almost always be free with a donation or postcard requested. People purchasing games for the computer over the internet is rare, especially from an unknown developer, therefor the majority will be free. Only on that rare game will a Windows game be released that will be charged for.
I try my best to incorporate different forms of input and control of windows games, but most often these will be designed for an XBox or XInput compatible gamepad. These are cheap enough and just plug into an available usb port so there's no since not having one.
My games are not developed to compete with the high end triple A games out there, they are designed to bring back the fun and feeling of the older generation of games that were based on gameplay, not graphics. Many of my games have simple concepts with a little backstory to them, but the gameplay and fun is what I hope will lead people back to play them again and again! These games will also likely never turn any kind of profit, therefor what support I do provide will be through email on a case by case basis, especially for pc games.
All games are developed on an older Athlon64 3400+, 2 gigs ram with an ATI x1950 pro video card, running Windows Vista.
